Airbus Starts Assembly of First A350-1000

Although Airbus just released its first A350-900 model last year, they are already moving forward with plans to produce the A350-1000 model. The new A350-1000 is nearly 7 meters longer than A350-900, and its wings also feature an extended trailing edge.  Other updated features include new in-flight entertainment, improved lavatory shapes, and updated cabin crew rest compartments.

For the past several months, internal Airbus suppliers have been hard at work developing A350-1000 components so that the first prototype will be completed within the next year.  French contractor Stelia Aerospace delivered the first A350-100 nose fuselage section to the Airbus assembly plant in Saint-Naizer.  Also, German contractor Premium Aerotec has delivered the first forward fuselage section to the Airbus plant in Hamburg.  Both the nose fuselage section and nose fuselage section will be joined together in Saint-Naizer, then flown via Beluga to the final A350-1000 assembly line in Toulouse.  As for the wings, Airbus is currently manufacturing them in their Brighton based plant using a combination of Airbus and Spirit Aerosystems components.

The A350-1000 is 74 meters long, making it the longest version of Airbus’ wide body family of aircraft.  It also features 18-inch wide seats, a maximum capacity of 440 passengers, and a total range of 7,900 nautical miles. These features make the A350-100 highly efficient, reliable, and cost-effective.  The A350-1000 will utilize Rolls Royce’s higher thrust Trent XWB engines, as will many of Airbus’ upcoming projects. Trent XWB engines are the most powerful engines ever developed for Airbus, and they are more than capable of making long-haul routes such as Paris-Santiago or Shanghai-Boston.

Airbus intends to complete final assembly of the A350-1000, with the first delivery scheduled for mid-2017.  Also, Airbus has already received 169 firm orders from 9 customers for the A350-1000.  More orders are expected as Airbus continues to develop the aircraft.
