Planning for 2015 by Looking Back at the 2014 Aircraft Market

Posted on February 19, 2015 linda strong aviation news

In an article from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) this month, data released by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association describes both areas of progress and concern for the aviation industry. Richard Aboulafia, an aviation analyst from the Teal Group, says the industry is “happily flying along at altitude on one engine, and the engine is North America.” Specifically, Cessna’s strong year reflects the strength of the North American market in comparison to the rest of the world.

According to 2014 GAMA data, five companies dominated the general aviation market: Gulfstream, Bombardier, Dassault, Textron, and Embraer. These five companies account for 92 percent of fixed-wing sales with the Bombardier and Gulfstream combination accounting for almost two-thirds of the global general aviation airplane market. Among the positives for 2014 are a 9.6 percent increase in piston airplane shipments and a 6.5 percent increase in business jet sales.

Although there were many positives, the numbers gathered from the 2014 year clearly indicate the areas that the GAMA need to prioritize in 2015, specifically reform that facilitates the introduction of new safety-enhancing products to market, reduces the inconsistent application of regulations, and strengthens the global engagement and cooperation among aviation authorities. In addition, certain losses during 2014 highlighted the need for continued collaboration with government leaders and policymakers.
