Significant Things to Know on Compact and Cost-effective Plate Nut

Plate Nut

A plate nut, also known as a nut plate, is a stamped sheet metal nut that is riveted to a work piece. They have a long tube that is internally threaded and a plate with two clearance holes for rivets. They were originally developed for the aerospace industry, Aerospace Nut Plates include: anchor nut plates, fixed nut plates, floating nut plates, high strength nut plates, self-locking nut plates, Anchor nuts plates are especially useful in blind locations, or where an attached nut must be removed frequently for inspection purposes or it facilitates maintenance. The nut mounting lugs may be riveted, welded or screwed to the structure. Anchor nut plates are self-wrenching and assure positive positioning of the bolt. Fixed nuts are designed for blind mounted applications where it is impractical to use hex nuts or where it is desirable to have an attached nut for ease of maintenance. Floating nut plates are low profile and lightweight plates used to install a captive nut behind a panel.

Nut Plate Types, Benefits and Applications:

The floating nut allows for an assembly that is not perfectly aligned. High strength nut plates are beneficial for many reasons including weight reduction, improved strength, added structural integrity and lower total assembly costs. Self-locking nut plates are pressed into the nut plate, eliminating the problem of dropping or losing hardware during installation. The nut plate becomes a captive part eliminating loose pieces, adding stability, and saving valuable time. These nuts are made up of variety of soft and hard materials. The choice of material depends on environment to which nut is subjected. Soft materials like copper or brass are used when nut is used in electrical application. Hard materials are used when nut is subjected to high stress environment. Sometimes stainless steel or nickel plated nuts are used in order to increase corrosion resistance. Locknut types are available, which utilize a nylon locking element, much like a nylon nut. These lock nuts are used when the nut is subjected to constant changes in environment or to vibrations. The nylon insert expands and stops vibrations of the nut and acts as a locking arrangement. Other types have a floating nut or replaceable locking elements.
