Hainan Airlines has set plans to purchase 30 units of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. With a purchase order worth USD$7.7 billion, the addition of 30 787 Dreamliner’s will more than triple their current fleet of 9, and is the largest order for the aircraft since 2013. The contract will be finalized soon and Hainan Airlines plans to accept their first delivery in 2021.

Hainan Airline’s purchase of the Dreamliner’s looks to accommodate the increase of Chinese travel demand through international network expansion for destinations across North American and Europe. Analysts suspect China will surpass North America as the largest market for aviation in the next 20 years, in which Chinese aircraft operators are estimated to order approximately 6,000 airplanes with a total worth of $870 billion.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long range, mid-sized wide body, twin jet airliner. Produced since 2007, there are currently 3 variants in production that range in number of passenger seat and seating configuration. As Boeing’s most fuel efficient airliner, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner also stands as the world’s first major airliner to be composted of composite material as its primary airframe material. Primary users of the aircraft include All Nippon Airways, Air India, Japan Airlines, and Qatar Airways. There have been 247 units produced with a unit costs ranging from $218 million to $297 million.
