Cessna Wins Skyhawk 172 Supply Deal with Ohio State University

In an April 2015 announcement, Cessna Aircraft Company stated that it has partnered up with the Ohio State University’s Flight Education program for the order of five Cessna Skyhawk 172 training aircraft. This long-term agreement was announced on April 21st at the Sun n’ Fun International Fly-In and Expo. This joint venture also includes aircraft support for each Skyhawk delivered, which will extend in 2022. Vice-president of Piston Aircraft, Doug May, stated, “The Ohio State University’s Flight Education program is a leading aviation resource for our country, so having them choose Cessna as a long-term aircraft partner demonstrates the great value of the Skyhawk as a flight training platform.”

Since 1917, the Ohio State University has been an established School of Military Aeronautics, which was appointed by the United States War Department. They are one of six such schools around the nation, earning their reputation as an experienced institution within the aerospace industry. Now, the College of Engineering at the Ohio State University Airport runs this Flight Education program. With this recent development, they hope to work with other leading companies within the field to expand their horizon. Brandon Mann, director of this program, said, “The new Skyhawks will continue upgrades to the fleet that will give aviation students enrolled in the university’s Center for Aviation Studies access to the more advanced avionics and NextGen compatible systems that they likely will encounter when they graduate and move into professional aviation careers.”

Ohio State’s Flight Education program will shift their focus from the Cessna 152s, 172s, 310s and others to the newer Skyhawk 172. Known as a dependable and efficient training aircraft, the Skyhawk 172 is equipped with the G1000 avionics system. Cessna, as part of the Textron Aviation Inc., is a growing company within the industry and now a guiding mentor for educational programs.
