Emirates, an airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has recently decided to retire over 50 aircraft within the next three years, as part of its modernization plan. Next year in 2016, the company will retire 26 airplanes, which include one Boeing 777-300ER, two Boeing 777-300s, six Boeing 777-200ERs, one A340-500, four A340-300s, as well as 12 A330-300s. In order to replace these retired airplanes, Emirates will be adding 36 new aircrafts in 2016, which include 16 Boeing 777-300ERs and 20 Airbus A380s, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

The modernization plan for the Emirates fleet is intended to improve the airline’s passenger comfort as well as their environmental performance. These newly acquired aircraft, the 777-300ER and A380, are among the quietest and most fuel efficient commercial airplanes available to this market, as they release less than 12% CO2 compared to other similar aircraft.

"Emirates has a global footprint as the world's largest international airline, and we have a responsibility to our customers, the communities we serve, and the planet. We are fully committed to flying a modern fleet that is better for the environment, and provides our customers with a superior level of comfort and safety,” said Tim Clark, the president of Emirates Airline. "With the retirement of older aircraft and the introduction of new, more fuel efficient aircraft in 2016, Emirates will continue to lead the industry in reducing the age of our fleet, while at the same time defining new levels of service that our customers have come to expect."

Through the replacement of older aircraft with more modern options, Emirates’ average fleet age will be roughly 5.6 years, which is far younger than the global average. The 26 aircraft retiring next year will have reached the average age of 15.7 years, which is substantially less than the industry average retirement age of 25 years.
