In order to boost passenger capacity and increase route flexibility, Ethiopian Airlines has finalized an order for six 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Boeing had previously announced the order but chose not to identify the buyer. On June 17th, 2015, at the Paris Air Show Boeing revealed the undisclosed customer would be Ethiopian Airlines. Ethiopian Airlines is currently operating thirteen 787-8 Dreamliners in its fleet. After delivery of the new order, the Addis Ababa-based carrier will operate a total of nineteen 787-8 Dreamliners.
The $1.3 billion order will improve Ethiopian Airlines’ efficiency and enhance their passengers’ comfort. Compared to the Boeing 767-300ER that will be replaced, the 787-8 uses 20-percent less fuel and creates a 20-percent reduction in emissions. In addition, a $500 million deal was placed with Rolls-Royce. The deal enables Ethiopian Airlines to use Rolls-Royce’s Trent 1000 engines to power their Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. Included in the deal is a long-term TotalCare support service for the engines.
Ethiopian Airlines was the first African operator of the Boeing 787 family of jetliners. The first order from the airlines was for ten 787-8s. Delivery of the first 10 occurred on August 14, 2012. Then Ethiopian agreed to lease three more Boeing 787-8s. Ethiopian operates an all-Boeing fleet of 737NG, 757, 767, 777, and 787 jets in passenger service. They also operate 757, MD-11 and 777 freighters, as well as the 737-400F. More Boeing jetliners are on order, but there is also an outstanding order for 12 Airbus A350-900 wide-bodies.
