Mitsubishi Aircraft recently opened a brand new aircraft engineering facility in Seattle, Washington, in hopes of accelerating its Mitsubishi regional jet (MRJ) program. The new facility was named the Seattle Engineering Center (SEC) and will allow Mitsubishi to strengthen its aircraft development capabilities. Its 150 members will include 50 Japanese engineers and 100 from Seattle that will work on analyzing flight-test data to get the new Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) certified and into service with various airlines.
Jay Inslee, governor of Washington State, is excited that the new facility has finally opened. He said in a statement: “We are thankful to the Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation for its investment in our state and are proud of the assistance we can provide in bringing this important aircraft to the worldwide market.” He also said that the state “looks forward to continuing our support for the MRJ and seeing how our relationship with Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation can grow even further."
SEC will team up with a company called Aerospace Testing Engineering & Certification (AeroTEC) to speed up the MRJ activities. AeroTEC will support US-based MRJ flight tests which are scheduled to happen at the Grant County International Airport in Washington during the second half of 2016. The first MRJ is an 88-seat version, to be followed a year later by a 76-seat version. Most of the MRJ’s 223 orders come from three U.S. regional airlines that operate low-density routes for the bigger U.S. carriers.
