Mitsubishi Regional Jet’s Maiden Flight Delayed to October

Mitsubishi, whose best known aircraft is the Zero fighter plane of World War II fame, has recently announced the launching of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ). Headquartered in Nagoya, Japan, the company decided to delay the jet’s release until later this year. During the remainder of these months, they plan to run further tests, including hydraulic tests, and make aesthetic changes to its exterior. Vice president of Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp.

Nobuo Kishi stated,

“We don’t see the change in the test flight as a delay, but as an improvement. We want to continue the test flights without interrupting them for modifications.”
With their increasing engineering staff and high technology research, they hope to expand their influence within the aerospace industry.

The MRJ regional jet is estimated to consume twenty percent less fuel compared to the popular single-aisle jets currently in the market. Architecture was designed by Pratt and Whitney. The jet utilizes a high-bypass geared turbofan engine. This equipment is known to be quieter, while still maintaining the necessary force and acceleration. Mitsubishi aims to acquire more than twenty percent of the market worldwide for single-aisle passenger gets. The delay in release, they believe, will not affect this projection.

Greg Waldon, editor of Flightglobal in Singapore, wrote, “It's easier to put a man on the moon than to build an airliner that airlines want to buy. It's an extremely high risk, extremely costly endeavor. There's going to be delays. There's going to be problems and you have to develop something that people want to buy."

Since its founding date in 1870, Mitsubishi has maintained presence in several different manufacturing industries, including motors, materials, heavy industries, and aerospace. They are expanding throughout the years as well. In May 2014, they joined a joint venture with Germany’s Siemens Company. Later in October, they purchased 91 percent of Cermaq, a Norwegian salmon farming firm.
