PW1200G Engines to Power Japan Airlines’ 32 Mitsubishi Regional Jets

Japan Airlines announced that they have ordered Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation to deliver a fleet of thirty-two Mitsubishi Regional Jet aircraft. Originally signed with a letter of intent on August 28, 2014, the agreement was more recently finalized to move forward on January 28, 2015. The Mitsubishi Regional Jet is a family of next-generation aircraft designed to provide seating for 70 – 90 passengers. Deliveries of the aircraft are expected to begin in 2021.

To power the 32 aircraft, Japan Airlines has selected Pratt & Whitney to provide PW1200G engines. The PurePower PW1200G Engine is next-generation engine featuring a fan drive gear system. With 3D aerodynamics, the engine is composed of lightweight materials such as a composite fan case. Technological improvements include upgrades in the compressor, combustor, turbine, controls, and engine health monitoring systems. With over 6,200 orders, the PurePower PW1200G engine has become one of the more popular next-generation engines on the market. The contract between Japan Airlines and Pratt & Whitney also calls for fleet management support services for the engines.
