Announced in March of 2015, the Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily Rossii) will begin production of the PAK-FA T-50 fighter jet, designed by aerospace and defense company Sukhoi. The T-50 is Russia’s answer to the United States’ F-22 Raptor as a fifth generation fighter jet aircraft.
The United States’ F-22, which entered service in 2005, is currently the only fifth-generation fighter aircraft fielded in combat. Defining fifth-generation aircraft is the utilization of stealth technology, supersonic speeds, all-digital and integrated fly-by-wire flight systems, and modern avionics.
The T-50 will replace the Russian Air Force’s MiG-29 and Su-27 jets in the fleet, and will also be produced for export to India. India has been extensively involved in the project since inception and has contributed up to 35% of the costs of the program.
In comparison with the Lockheed Martin F-22, the T-50 has a maximum takeoff weight of 35480 kg to the F-22’s 38000 kg; a combat load of 10000 kg to 10370 kg; a maximum speed of 2600 km/h to 2410 km/h; a maximum range of 5500 km to 3400 km, a target detection range of up to 400 km to 210 km; and a maximum altitude of 20000 m to 22000 m. The Sukhoi aircraft will be equipped with upgraded 30 mm Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-301 cannons and have 10 hardpoints in two internal bays with two optional external hardpoints for missiles or other payloads.
Sukhoi was founded in 1939 as the Sukhoi Design Bureau (OKB-51) and is currently headquartered in Moscow, Russia. Beginning as a nationalized company, the company was privatized after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1990s. Although primarily focused on military aircraft, the company also produces civil aerobatic aircraft with approximately 25% of the civil division owned by Italian industrial group Finmeccanica.
