For the first time in the industry, additive manufacturing will be used to produce jet engine parts. Pratt & Whitney has been working with additive manufacturing since the 1980s. More than 100,000 prototype parts have already been produced using additive manufacturing over the past 25 years. Pratt & Whitney will use additive manufacturing to produce compressor stators and synch ring brackets for its production engines. Also called three-dimensional printing, additive manufacturing builds parts one layer at a time. Successive layers of material are laid down under computer control. Two years after the HondaJet light twin-engine was developed, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved GE Honda Aero’s HF120 for production. The trusty twin-engine weighs 2,059 lbs. and was manufactured through a joint venture between GE Aviation and HondaJet under a USD$4.5 million contract. Production of the HF120 began testing at the Lynn, Massachusetts facility but will move to the Burlington, Massachusetts plant. The Burlington plant has the ability to build up to five hundred engines a year. After production, the engine may also be procured by Sapphire for the Cessna Citation jet. Read more >>
Hainan Airlines has set plans to purchase 30 units of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. With a purchase order worth USD$7.7 billion, the addition of 30 787 Dreamliner’s will more than triple their current fleet of 9, and is the largest order for the aircraft since 2013. The contract will be finalized soon and Hainan Airlines plans to accept their first delivery in 2021. Read more >>
Announced in March of 2015, the Russian Air Force (Voyenno-Vozdushnye Sily Rossii) will begin production of the PAK-FA T-50 fighter jet, designed by aerospace and defense company Sukhoi.
